Considering Meditation? My Surprising Secret About Where to Start Your Practice

Considering Meditation? My Surprising Secret About Where to Start Your Practice

July 22, 2014โ€ข3 min read

This spring I discovered a consistent practice in meditation. Previously I'd done a little bit here. A little bit there. But never every day.

The routine was everything. A game changer.

I'm sleeping better than I have in years. I'm more creative and productive. I'm more empathetic, and compassionate. I'm listening better. I notice silver linings everywhere - even on the darkest of clouds. I'm more resilient to adversity. My periods are more comfortable. It is a time I look forward to every day.

I encourage my patients to take baby steps towards such a quiet practice, based on my own personal triumphs. I've observed my patients responses, which are quite magnificent. Better sleep, improved moods - peppiness that is almost offensive, - less pain, increased motivation, and incredibly healthy poos - bordering on perfection.

And while I'm on the topic of bowel movements, I will share what I tell my patients about where to start their practice. And it may surprise you.

I especially tell my busy moms about this. I explain the importance of finding even just a small window of time where they can be by themselves, and enjoy a quiet moment.

I tell them to start with one to five minutes of deep breathing while focusing on the breath in the bathroom.

Here are 8 reasons why the bathroom is the best place to start your meditation practice

  1. There is a place to sit

  2. You can lock the door

  3. It's guaranteed alone time

  4. People are less likely to disturb you than in other rooms of the house

  5. If they knock, you can tell them you need more time

  6. You don't have to explain what you were doing, or why you took so long

  7. You don't need to be home to do it - any public washroom will suffice

  8. In Chinese medicine the lungs and the large intestine are partners in the same organ system. They're both about letting go. The lungs are also about allowing in the new. What a perfect time to take in new inspiration (isn't that what we do when we breath in?) as you're letting go of old stuff.

It may not be glamorous, but the strength of it lies in how functional it is. You don't need silk cushions or smelly candles. All you need is to wiggle in time for yourself. I think the bathroom is the perfect place to do that. As you notice the gain and benefits, you'll recognize how valuable the time is - not just for you, but for your entire family and work environment. You'll be able to be more assertive about your private time, and can even venture out of the bathroom.

In the comments below I'd love to hear about your thoughts on meditation and deep breathing. Do you have a practice? Do you have a routine? What have you noticed since you started? If you don't have a practice what is preventing you from starting one?

Be sure to share this with your buds. It may seem goofy, but it works.

Happy meditating!

Here's to your delightful, thriving, healthy life,
